5 Short Stories About Baptism

Jesus’ Baptism (Matthew 3)

Jesus was baptized at the beginning of His earthly ministry, but clearly, baptism was not necessary for Him as Jesus had no sin.  He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness and as an example that we should be baptized upon confession of faith in Him.  After Jesus’ baptism, “a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). If you’ve never been baptized, why not?  We are commanded to do so.

Believer’s Baptism (Mark 16)

Saint Mark wrote that “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16), so it is clear that baptism doesn’t save them or condemn them if they refuse to be baptized, but rather, it is their refusal to believe that condemns them.  A person who is saved should get baptized, but not in order to be saved.  Jesus alone saves (Acts 4:12).

Old Testament Baptism (2 Corinthians 5

Baptism was not really new to the Jews as the Old Testament priests went through a washing of water that is symbolic of baptism. In Leviticus 16:4 it says the priest “is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on.”  That pictures our salvation; we are saved, we are baptized, and them we receive the righteousness of Christ attributed on our behalf (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Water Baptism (Acts 2)

The Apostle Peter said during his great Pentecost sermon, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).  They must repent and believe, and then be baptized, but they are not baptized in order to be saved, but because they are saved.

Baptizing Others (Roman 6)

Baptism symbolizes the death of the old self into a watery grave, and then raised out of the water to new life in Christ…being raised with Christ.  The Apostle Paul wrote that “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

Final Words about Baptism

Baptism is an important symbol for the Christian, but it’s more than that.  It’s commanded of every one who believes.  Jesus said we must repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:16), and then after we publicly profess faith in Christ, we must be baptized, and then we’re to go and make disciples of others, baptizing them into the name, or to identify them with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. If you’ve never been baptized, why not?  It’s not too late.
